🤔 Why Does Your Body Type Matter in TCM?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), your body type (体质) determines how you respond to Singapore’s hot and humid climate, what foods suit you, and what health issues you’re prone to. Understanding your body type is the first step toward true wellness.
Singapore’s unique environment — year-round summer, high humidity, constant air-conditioning — creates specific health challenges for different body types. Here are the 5 most common body types found among Singaporeans.
🌡️ 1. Damp-Heat Type (湿热体质)
Signs you’re Damp-Heat:
- Oily skin, acne breakouts, especially on the face and back
- Feeling heavy and sluggish, especially after meals
- Bitter taste in the mouth, bad breath
- Yellowish tongue coating
- Prone to skin rashes, eczema, or fungal infections
- Stool is sticky and hard to flush
💡 TCM tips: Eat bitter foods (bitter gourd, celery), avoid fried and spicy food, drink chrysanthemum tea or barley water. Cupping and gua sha work wonders for this type.
❄️ 2. Cold-Damp Type (寒湿体质)
Signs you’re Cold-Damp:
- Cold hands and feet even in Singapore’s heat
- Prefer warm drinks, dislike air-conditioning
- Pale complexion, tired easily
- Stool is loose, frequent urination
- Joint aches that get worse in rainy weather
- White, thick tongue coating
💡 TCM tips: Avoid cold drinks and raw foods. Eat warming foods like ginger tea, cinnamon, and lamb soup. Moxibustion (艾灸) is excellent for warming your body. Tuina massage helps dispel cold from your joints.
🔥 3. Yin Deficiency Type (阴虚体质)
Signs you’re Yin Deficient:
- Feeling hot, especially at night — dry throat, dry skin
- Night sweats, difficulty falling asleep
- Red, dry eyes — common in office workers staring at screens
- Irritability, feeling anxious
- Tongue is red with little or no coating
💡 TCM tips: Nourish your yin with goji berries, snow fungus, and lily bulb. Avoid staying up late. Herbal teas like chrysanthemum and wolfberry are your best friends.
⚡ 4. Qi Deficiency Type (气虚体质)
Signs you’re Qi Deficient:
- Always tired — even after a full night’s sleep
- Shortness of breath, weak voice
- Easy sweating, especially during the day
- Poor appetite, bloating after meals
- Pale tongue with teeth marks on the sides
- Frequently catch colds or fall sick easily
💡 TCM tips: Eat chicken soup with Chinese yam (山药) and red dates (红枣). Avoid overexertion. Acupressure on ST36 (足三里) — located below the knee — helps boost your energy.
💜 5. Blood Stasis Type (血瘀体质)
Signs you’re Blood Stasis:
- Dark circles under eyes, dull complexion
- Easily bruised, slow healing from injuries
- Sharp, stabbing pain in fixed locations
- Dark purple tongue or visible veins under the tongue
- Women: painful periods with dark clots
- Cold extremities with purple-tinged nails
💡 TCM tips: Move your body — walking, stretching, yoga. Cupping therapy is highly effective for blood stasis. Turmeric, ginger, and dark leafy greens help improve circulation.

🔬 How to Find Your Body Type
Most Singaporeans are actually a mix of multiple body types. The most common combinations include:
- Damp-Heat + Qi Deficiency — feel heavy AND tired (very common in Singapore)
- Cold-Damp + Blood Stasis — feel cold, achy, and stiff
- Yin Deficiency + Damp-Heat — feel hot on the inside but sluggish
That’s why a professional TCM consultation is essential — a qualified physician will check your pulse (脉诊) and tongue (舌诊) to determine your exact constitution.
